At the time, Mom’s question caught me by surprise: “Have you ever tried marijuana?” she asked, sloshing her coffee around in a mug as we stood together in the kitchen. My mind went blank. Could this be the fabled “drug...

The history of prohibition in the uS would suggest that it never had anything at all to do with the ”medicinal” use, rather the fact that Henry Ford built a motorcar that had a lot of hemp in it. Hemp cloth upholstery, hemp vinyl and help oil and fuel.
It was cotton, oil and timber industries that wanted to end the hemp industry. And yes, I would imagine even the AMA has come out against hem use even in medicine as it would not be profitable for the real drug czars, E. I. DuPont, I. G. Farben, etc.
I’ve never hear about a pot smoker perpetrating a violent crime, although I have see a few young fellows run into 7-Eleven grab $3.00 in candy and soda pop and leave a $5.00 bill on the counter and leave to munch outside.

When I visited my parents a few weeks ago, they dropped the bombshell on me: they smoke weed. I was like "holy *****," then I thought "wow, that's pretty cool." Then we smoked a doobie together.
Note: The last part didn't happen. Everything else is true though.

i've had quite a few doctors tell me, in person, that there's absolutely no link between weed and lung cancer.

When my younger sister turned 18 my parents didn't even try to hide it from us anymore. Then we started smoking together regularly.

With all of the positive uses of hemp, I cannot see why we still have laws prohibiting its use. And I am not just talking about getting a buzz.
Hemp clothing, hemp foods, hemp oils, hemp paper and building products, and let’s not forget the sails and ropes that made our naval fleets successful. At one time in the US it was a REQUIREMENT to grow hemp as it was viewed as a necessary crop.
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both smoked pot!

Yes. The prohibition hasn’t worked. Everyone knows it hasn’t worked.
Cannabis can actually help with glaucoma and psoriasis as well.
I think that some the issues go back to a deep unwritten/unspoken concern about states of consciousness - which is to say that the states of consciousness (and behaviour)involved in getting drunk with alcohol more closely approximate those that society accepts and has come to expect. The states of consciousness involved with cannabis is of a slightly left-of-center perception of things, not the blind and potential aggressive vigour associated with alcohol and in large measure with our consumer and materialist culture(s).
Bring on the pot, I say.
